Greektown, a northern appendage of Detroit's reviving downtown, took root during the 1880s and flourished during the early 1900s with the advent of the auto industry. Even before then, Detroit was known as an industrial center due to its location near the western edge of Lake Erie. Immigrants came from southern mainland Greece with many of their enterprises focused on foodstuffs - restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores and coffee houses.

Many of today's Greektown apartments are historical holdovers from when the area was more residential in character. Today, similar to the past, Greektown apartment residents predominantly are single. Strong Greek coffee still can be found, along with the modern-day mocha and latte treats.

The original Greektown barely survived into the 20th Century. Local government was ravaging the area for parking lots and public buildings, but Greektown Merchants Association formed in 1903 and started marketing their wares beyond Detroit, to Michigan's entire southeast region. Thus Greektown remains as Detroit's leading tourist attraction. When Greektown apartment dwellers venture out into the neighborhood, they will encounter a good number of outside visitors.

Just because it's Greektown, that doesn't mean a Greektown apartment tenant or visitor must dine entirely on euro sandwiches or feta cheese. Other ethnic merchants have joined the mix. Therefore in Greektown, the available dining includes not only the New Parthenon Restaurant and Cyprus Taverna, but also Sweet Georgia Brown's, Pizza Papali's and the Bahn Thai Cafe.

Amid this eclectic New World mix, Victorian-era commercial streetscapes remain. Portions of Greektown are federally designated as historic districts through the National Register of Historic Places.

Greektown Casino, meanwhile, is one of three state-sanctioned gaming centers built in Detroit during this decade. For Greektown apartment seekers, the new indeed is mixed with the old.
