Detroit Indian Village apartment dwellers don't have to be historic preservation experts. Newcomers can learn all they need to know from members of the Historic Indian Village Association, established in 1937 and still going strong.

Leaders of the Historic Indian Village Association have counted no less than 17 types of architecture styles in their neighborhood. These homes were built almost entirely between 1895 and 1930. Styles range from Georgian and Romanesque to Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival. Indian Village apartment tenants may find their living quarters graced with carved wood moldings, vaulted ceilings, and ornate fireplaces

Some rental units in Detroit's Indian Village actually are carriage houses. A good number of these carriage houses are larger than regular homes in a typical suburb, and also feature tremendous architectural character. Other carriage houses were converted to two- and three-car garages. Edsel Ford once lived in Indian Village, as did Bernard Stroh, of Stroh's beer fame.

Indian Village apartments are plentiful because of a history of neighborhood transition. As early as the 1920s, wealthy families started an exodus to the Grosse Pointe area. Many of these properties were converted to boarding houses for autoworkers who had migrated to Detroit from the southern states.

The Historic Indian Village Association conducts grassroots neighborhood activities, such as spring cleanups and summer picnics. Anyone who rents an Indian Village neighborhood apartment will have an easy time in getting to know the neighbors.
